About Us

Lambda Alpha International, the Honorary Society for the Advancement of Land Economics, was founded in 1930 under the leadership of the renowned land economist and champion of academic freedom, Richard T. Ely. As an honorary society, it provides a forum for the study and advancement of land economics where the “winnowing and sifting” of ideas takes place in an atmosphere of mutual respect.

The LAI Philly Chapter offers its members and guests:

  • informative and provocative programs on key land use policies and new redevelopment projects;
  • behind-the-scenes tours allowing first-hand experiences of interest to members;
  • an annual Holiday Party; and
  • frequent opportunities for networking.

Membership in the LAI Philly Chapter, as with all Lambda Alpha International Chapters, is by invitation only. Current members in good standing nominate individuals who have extensive experience (at least 10 years) in the fields of land economics, architecture, engineering, real estate, planning, government, academia, real estate, land use and zoning law, etc.

The Membership Committee of the Board of Directors reviews and recommends a slate of new members who are sworn in at the annual initiation banquet.

In many cities, district energy systems offer an alternative to building electrification and help meet net zero building goals. Join LAI Philly for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Vicinity Energy facility in Philadelphia to learn about this sustainable solution.

As one of the biggest district energy systems in the U.S., the Philadelphia network touches over 100 million square feet of building space during the heating and cooling seasons, with tremendous existing and future potential to reduce Philadelphia’s carbon footprint.

Enjoy light breakfast and networking with fellow attendees.
