Lambda Alpha International recognizes leadership in the land economics professions through their distinguished awards program. Four awards recognize service to land economics professions or to the organization: Member of the Year, Public Official, Urban Affairs, and Fellow Awards. Two awards honor the memory and contributions of distinguished LAI members: Richard T. Ely Distinguished Educator Award and the Gerald D. Hines International Humanitarian Award.
At the Lambda Alpha Board of Governors Meeting in Chicago in 2000, two new awards were established. One honors professional excellence in Journalism and the other recognizes professional contributions as an Author.

That person also became a mentor to a number of people who helped carry out the vision and assure that the community remain a vital and a pleasant place to live.
