LAI Student Association - Policy Statement
This policy is adopted as of October 9,1991, and amended as of April 10, 1992, by the Board of Governors of LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL pursuant to Article VI, Section 6, of the Constitution of LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL.
1. Lambda Alpha international Student Association. There is hereby created "Lambda Alpha International Student Association'("LAISA"), an unincorporated department of LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL.
2. Purpose. The purposes of LAISA memberships and student chapters are to
(i) honor student scholarship in disciplines associated with LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL,
(ii) encourage interdisciplinary learning and understanding among qualified students and faculty members and
(iii) expose qualified students to the professional disciplines of members of local chapters of LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL.
3. Governance. Policy direction and management of record keeping, dues collections and other tasks of governance of LAISA is hereby vested in the LAISA Executive Council subject to the provisions of this policy. Among the other duties of the LAISA Executive Council will be the preparation of an annual LAISA budget for approval by the LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL Board of Governors for inclusion in the annual LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL budget. Administrative implementation of policy direction and management shall be a function of the Executive Director of LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL. The LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL Executive Council shall act by majority vote of its members; such vote, ff taken without a meeting, shall be in writing (which may be facsimile.).
3.1 The LAISA Executive Council shall consist of seven members of LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL appointed by the LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL Board of Governors, each for a term of two years; provided, however, the members of the first LAISA Executive Council shall be appointed for such staggered terms as the LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL Board of Governors shall determine. Appointments shall be made by the LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL Board of Governors or by the Executive Committee of LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL. So far as the LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL Board of Governors deems it practicable, the LAISA Executive Council shall consist of four university or college faculty members and three nonacademic members.
3.2 The members of the LAISA Executive Council shall elect from among the members a Chairman and such other officers as the members determine appropriate.
4. Qualifications for Membership. Individuals eligible for membership in LAISA must possess the following qualifications at the time LAISA membership is conferred:
4.1 Be a student in the discipline of land economics or a related field (e.g., appraisal, land use planning, architecture, civil engineering, construction, development, land development financing, real estate law) at a college or university
(i) accredited by the Accrediting Council on Post Secondary Accreditation or
(ii) or approved by the LAISA Executive Council.
Membership shall be open to men and women of every race, creed or color.
5. Applications for Membership. Individuals desiring membership in LAISA shall submit to the office of LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL
(i) a completed and signed application form prescribed by the LAISA Executive Council and
(ii) dues for the school year in which the applicant becomes a member of LAISA.
6. Dues. Members of LAISA shall pay dues to LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL in the amount of $25.00 (or such other amount as the Board of Governors shall from time to time determine) per school year, commencing with the school year in which the member received his or her membership. However, any new member who becomes a member of LAISA on or after March 1 of any school year and pays, at the time of becoming a member, the annual dues for such school year, shall receive credit for the annual dues for such school year and for the next following school year. Except for the year in which a member received his or her membership, annual dues shall be paid on or before December 15 of each year. The Executive Director of LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL shall mail dues notices to each member of LAISA no later than September 30 of each year. Membership of any individual who does not pay annual dues December 15 shall be automatically revoked. Any member may, after graduation, maintain his or her membership by continuing to pay annual dues.
7. Membership Privileges. Each member of LAISA shall be entitled to the following privileges:
7.1 Receive a certificate of membership.
7.2 Attend, without payment of registration fees, meetings of the International Congress of LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL.
7.3 Attend, as a guest and upon invitation of the President at a nearby local chapter of LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL, meetings of such local chapter.
7.4 Be recognized for academic achievement by receiving from LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL the award of International Fellow of LAISA. The qualifications for International Fellow of LAISA are:
7.4.1 The candidate
(i) if an undergraduate student, shall have completed 75% of the course requirements for an undergraduate degree or
(ii) if a graduate student, shall have completed 50% of the course requirements for a graduate degree.
7.4.2 The candidate shall possess a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 on scale where 4.0 is the maximum (or an equivalent average on a different scale).
8. Student Chapters. A student chapter of LAISA may be chartered by the LAISA Executive Council at any college or university
(i) accredited by the Accrediting Council on Post Secondary Accreditation or
(ii) approved by the LAISA Executive Council, if the following conditions are met:
8.1 A written commitment by a professor or instructor at such college or university who is a member of LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL to act as faculty advisor. The LAISA Executive Council may, in particular instances, waive the requirements that the faculty advisor be a member of LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL.
8.2A written request for such charter is submitted to the LAISA Executive Council by the faculty advisor.
8.3 The faculty advisor affirms that not less than 10 LAISA members of such college or university have expressed their desire that such chapter be chartered.
8.4 If required by such college or university, the written approval of the some to the creation of the student chapter.
The name of each student chapter shall denote the college or university at which such chapter is located.
9. Chapter Administration. After a chapter is chartered, the faculty advisor thereof shall be responsible for encouraging payment of annual dues by chapter members. Each chapter shall have such chapter officers as the faculty advisor thereof approves.
10. Certificate, Insignia, Chapter.
(i) The form of certificate of membership in LAISA,
(ii) the design and materials of the key or pin awarded by LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL to each LAISA member and
(iii) the form of charter for student chapters shall be determined by the Chairman of the LAISA Executive Council with approval of the President of LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL. Certificates and charters shall be signed on behalf of LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL by the President of LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL and the Chairman of the LAISA Executive Council.
11. Withdrawal of Charter. The charter of any student chapter shall be withdrawn by the LAISA Executive Council it determines that:
11.1 No faculty advisor for such chapter has existed or been active for a period of 12 months.
11.2 There has been, for a period of 12 months, less than 8 LAISA members in such chapter.
11.3 Any cause
(i) determined by the LAISA Executive Council to be contrary to the purposes of LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL and
(ii) concurred in by the President of LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL.
12. Amendment. This policy may be amended from time to time by the Board of Governors of LAMBDA ALPHA INTERNATIONAL, but only after receiving the advice and recommendation of the LAISA Executive Council on any proposed amendment.
