Dear Chairperson and Committee Members:
The year 2009 marks the Centennial anniversary of the publication of Daniel
Burnham's and Edward Bennett's Plan of Chicago. The Plan was the first comprehensive attempt to reimagine a major American City and defined the City Beautiful movement. It has shaped public planning theory and practice throughout the United States and the world. Since its completion, Burnham's admonition to "make no little plans" has been a guiding principle for generations of planners, architects, and community leaders.
One hundred years later, the spirit of the Plan of Chicago still resonates for Chicago and cities across America. The Centennial presents a moment-in-time opportunity to celebrate that spirit and work boldly together to shape the future of our cities and regions to ensure that they are environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable.
Burnham believed that cities can and must be remade for the better and forthe benefit of all citizens. His plans for Chicago and other American cities including Cleveland, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. embody those beliefs.
To honor Burnham's seminal work and his vision as an architect, planner, andcity builder who continues to inspire us today, we respectfully request that the Stamp Advisory Committee recognize the Centennial anniversary of the Plan of Chicago.
Sincerely,
