WAIKIKI

More than a quarter million people find their piece of paradise daily in Waikiki, on Oahu's south shore. Known for its fabulous climate, multi-cultural life styles and beautiful beaches, Waikiki attracts millions from around the world. Waikiki, one and a half miles long is perhaps the best known beach in the world. Originally, Waikiki ("spouting water") was mostly marshland. Its transformation began in 1922 when its springs were capped and the land behind the beach drained and filled. Waikiki today, with its bustling beach center, tree-rimmed Kapiolani Park and residential neighborhoods reaching halfway up the Koolau Mountain Ridge is full of activity and excitement. Shopping, ethnic festivals, special events, galas and nightlife activities abound in Waikiki.
