I am very proud that the Board of Governors of Lambda Alpha International
has elected me as your organization's 43rd President. I have been
a member since 1983 and have watched both my local Chicago-Ely Chapter
and International grow over the past twenty years.
Lambda Alpha has become more than just an “honorary society.”
This past year we added to our tag line the phrase “providing
a forum for the advancement of land economics." This addition
is rooted by the work of Professor Richard T. Ely
who inspired the founding of LAI. Ely believed that land is a trust
that has been given to individuals to manage for the betterment of
society. Our goal as a professional society is to provide the forum
for the vigorous discussion of issues facing land economics. In a
phrase associated with Professor Ely, it is through the “continual
winnowing and shifting that we will find truth” that I find
the purpose of our organization.
Over the next two years that I will lead this organization, I hope
to challenge each of our chapters and individuals to find better ways
to engage our talents. I want Lambda Alpha and each of its members
to become stronger leaders in their communities by finding ways to
provide the forum for the continual winnowing and shifting of the
issues facing the use of our land. By taking a leadership role we
will all benefit – ourselves and our community.
I encourage each of you to take a more active role in your local chapter
and in International. I look forward to hearing your ideas and suggestions
that will help our organization achieve our goal of searching for
better ways to be stewards of our land.

In
Memoriam
Elizabeth Jackson McLean (Ely Chapter
1974) died September 17, 2003 at age 71. Mrs. McLean is believed
to be the first woman initiated into Lambda Alpha. She was a woman
of many firsts. In 1954, she graduated with honors and was second
in her class at the University of Wisconsin and was the only woman
in her engineering class. Her first job was an associate planner
for Chicago. She was later promoted to chief research and planning
engineer for the Department of Public Works and in 1967 she was
named assistant commission of public works and was appointed to
first deputy commissioner in 1973. Mrs. McLean left City Hall in
1986 to start her own consulting firm, EJM Engineering, which specialized
in civil and traffic engineering. Elizabeth needed to be a
very strong women to succeed in what was a man's world and she opened
the door for many women to follow, we are very proud to have had
her as the first women member of Lambda Alpha International.
