Friday, April 28
After lunch we will depart from the Hotel Monaco on the first of a series of short walking tours through the heart of downtown D.C. This first leg will take us to the National Building Museum, which is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this winter. The museum is located in the Pension Building, a national historic treasure with a spectacular Great Hall. Howard Decker, LAI member and architect with EEK will use the model of the Federal City to provide an overview of the historical forces that have shaped Washington.
We will then continue our downtown walk to the site of the Freedom Forum’s Newseum located on the National Mall and dedicated to the First Amendment. We will have a hardhat tour and a video presentation of this building designed by the Polshek Partnership.
Our next walk will take us to the office of the National Capital Planning Commission where Director Patty Gallagher and others will discuss the future of the city using the NCPC model of planning America’s Capital for the 21st Century from NCPC’s “Extending the Legacy” Plan.
NAR Headquarters |
Our guests will have the option to return to the hotel for a break before dinner, or to continue with the tour by bus to a reception at the new headquarters of the National Association of Realtors® for a tour of this LEED building. Then on to Union Station for a brief self-tour of the exciting retail development that shares the station with AMTRAK, commuter rail and Metro rail transportation services.
Our bus will then take us to dinner at Clyde’s Restaurant in the new Gallery Place mixed-use development designed by Arquitectonica. Our sponsor is Akridge Development, who developed Gallery Place and is planning an expansion of Union Station over railroad air rights. Our featured dinner speaker is Anthony Downs, Senior Fellow in Economic Studies at the Brookings Institution, and an expert in democracy, demographics, housing, metropolitan policy, real estate, and urban transport economics. Mr. Downs will bring his economic expertise and common sense to his discussion of urban problems such as affordable housing and traffic congestion.
LBJ Room, US Capitol |
Saturday, April 29
After breakfast, we will leave the hotel by bus for a driving tour of the Capitol Hill residential neighborhood and then to the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center for a hardhat tour and presentation about this exciting new facility from the Architect of the
Capitol.

Anacostia Waterfront Corporation |
Our bus will take us to the headquarters of the newly formed city-owned Anacostia Waterfront Corporation that has the responsibility for implementing the city’s plans that were developed over the past 5 years under Mayor William’s administration. Uwe Brandes, AICP will present an overview of the waterfront plan and highlight some of the projects that are already in development: including the new headquarters of the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Washington Nationals Ballpark, and an historic canal park design by Gustafson Guthrie Nichol Ltd., Landscape Architects.
Museum of the American Indian |
We will travel by bus through the city along the National Mall with drive-by visits to the new Museum of the American Indian, the World War II Memorial, and other sites with a running travelogue by LAI member Tom Luebke who is Secretary of the Commission of Fine Arts.
We will bus to Georgetown where we will lunch at the Sequoia Restaurant at the mixed-use Washington Harbour development with great views of the Potomac River. Following lunch, Anthony Lanier, LAI member and President of Eastbanc, Inc. real estate development will give a presentation of his recent redevelopment of several blocks of Georgetown, including two new Ritz Carlton hotel and mixed-use developments in Georgetown and the nearby West End neighborhood. Eastbanc’s development strategy has resulted in a strong revitalization trend in these two neighborhoods.
Following the Eastbanc presentation our guests will have several options: (1) free time on their own, (2) a walking tour of Georgetown, (3) a bus ride back to the hotel with drive-by touring stops on the way.
