New York City’s real estate market is famous for its skyscrapers and large developments, but the most common lot sizes throughout the city are actually very small.  Small lots pose particular limitations and challenges – technical, financial, and aesthetic - however, these lots can provide a unique and profitable investment opportunity if done properly and strategically.  The presentation will use design-thinking to propose strategies on how to make the most common type of vacant and underutilized land left in New York City more viable for development.

Andre Soluri is a licensed Architect, Principal and Founder of Soluri Architecture, an award-winning firm in New York City that has completed 120 projects since 2005 including new building construction and renovations in a wide range of sectors, scales, and typologies.

His recent work and research focuses on solving the challenges of designing & developing small urban-infill lots in New York City’s underprivileged neighborhoods.  The Vidro, Andre’s first new building, exemplifies this, winning many awards and named by Fast Company magazine among the 10 most innovative buildings of 2020.

COVID-19 has been a call-to-arms for Andre to tackle challenges beyond traditional practice to help those in need through advocacy, action, and thought-leadership.  Through the AIA Unified Crisis Taskforce Andre leads a team producing webinars helping small businesses reopen while adapting to the future of distributed/hybrid workplaces, and has also co-founded the award-winning “Design Corps” where NYC’s architecture community provides pro-bono design services for outdoor dining build-outs to struggling restaurants during the pandemic.

Andre’s training and education has been broad and interdisciplinary.  He graduated from Cooper Union’s prestigious undergraduate architecture school, completed his master’s degree at Columbia University’s GSAPP, and is an alumnus of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program. Andre is a member of the AIA and sits on the Advocacy & Policy Committee at AIANY.
